Sandwich Society
We slid into another seat on the airplane. Now several flights into our freshly extended journey, thanks to some uninvited aircraft delays, we weren’t expecting much.
This flight was a short hop to another country that would hopefully land in time to take us to yet another country, which was actually our original destination.
We had just been rebooked onto this airline that we hadn’t flown before, but with it only being around two hours in the air, we didn’t think we’d get more than a sip of water and maybe peanuts.
Shortly into the flight, our gaze out the window was interrupted by a flight attendant asking if we’d like a sandwich.
Hm. That was a new one! This was such a short flight that we were surprised to get a meal but decided to give it a try for the sake of a cultural experience.
A few bites in and we were pleasantly surprised. "What’s in this?"
We examined the ingredients on the package to find it was not a whole lot, but the story printed on the outside showed the thoughtful intention in each ingredient that was chosen for its high quality and tradition.
Apparently the Dutch are known for their sandwich culture and place an emphasis on quality in everything.
Consequently, the premium level of the sandwich fixings turned a simple cheese and honey mustard combination on bread into an artisanal experience.
This was quite a contrast to the subpar meals we’d been served on the other flights. Seemingly drowning in descriptive flavors and add ons, the food was still overproduced and lackluster.
It comes down to this one idea: less but better.
Quality counts but clutter detracts.
Sometimes we get caught in the trap of thinking that more equals better when that’s not always the case.
A busier schedule is not always a better one. Having more things, more options, or more responsibilities is not always an improvement. Quantity does not always trump quality.
This begs the question—What do you need to simplify in your life that you’ve been over producing?
Are you choosing quality when it comes to how you invest your time, resources, thoughts, etc.?
What clutter could be removed to allow the simple, yet high quality elements of your life to shine?
Don’t let the intrigue of the latest trends keep you from experiencing the joy in life’s simple yet valuable treasures.
